Yesterday, Facebook announced a new software integration for Android: Facebook Home. We were expecting for a lot of time now a Facebook phone or at least a new OS developed by Facebook. But Facebook Home is neither of those. It is in fact «a family of Facebook apps that overhauls your entire device, turning it into a Facebook phone» said Mark Zuckerberg in yesterday’s conference.
HTC also announced on the same occasion their new phone, First, which will be the first phone to be released with Facebook Home all integrated. According to them, Smartphone users spend 25 percent of their time on Facebook and Instagram. So why not make a phone that is focused around it.
Zuckerberg mentioned that by making Home a series of applications that will be presented centrally within the devices, he wishes to reach as many people as possible. You’ll have the Cover feed that shows the statues and publications from your friends, and where you can interact with them. The Cover feed will even be replacing your regular lock screen. That still will allow to enter your phone to access your favorite apps without any problems. They also announced Chat head for messaging, and you’ll also be able to manage your contacts easily by drag and drop. The notification systems as also being revisited. Rather than focusing on the Apps, Home really focuses on the people ans on their contacts.
Android with its open platform is the perfect match for Home according to Facebook. Can we suspect a direct attack to iOS? Will an application like Home be one day available on iOS? The HTC one and one X, in addition to the Samsung Galaxy SIII, S4 and Note II should be offering Facebook Home. No Google phone has been announced yet with this new feature.
A tablet version should also be released in the upcoming months but has not been revealed yet.
